In the heart of the island of Cyprus, Lefkara Dam provides not only a reservoir of fresh water but also an excellent location for picnics and outdoor sports.
Not everyone knows that there are only 5 natural lakes in Cyprus, either salty or semi-salty.
In order to store as much freshwater as possible, Cypriot governments have built several damns over the last decades.
The Lefkara Dam was built in 1973 and is located in the middle between Nicosia, Larnaca and Limassol. It is only 4km north of the village of Lefkara.
The dam is surrounded by various mountain peaks and forests, recalling a Swiss lake.
It is possible to hike or bike around the dam, or simply spend some time outdoor admiring the nature.
The level of water varies during the year, the dam has a capacity of 13.9 million cubical meters. The water supplies domestic use in the city of Larnaca and several other villages, and is also used for irrigation.
Seabass, trout and other animals live in the water. However, fishing without permission is prohibited and will be charged with several thousand euros and/or imprisonment.
Driving to the dam is very easy, you will go through an unpaved road for no more than 5 minutes and then you can park your car and explore the area.
While you escape the busy city life, do not forget to leave the place as you found it. Do not throw trash around and do not make fires.
